What to Do in Montmartre

If you want to feel the most romantic and artistic side of Paris, you should definitely visit Montmartre. This area is on a hill in the north of the city, and it feels like a small village inside Paris. The streets are charming, the views are beautiful, and everywhere you look you can feel the history of artists who once lived there!

1. Visit the Sacré-Cœur

The first thing you will see is the famous white basilica at the top of the hill. Sacré-Cœur is one of the most iconic places in Paris. You can enter for free, and inside it is very calm and peaceful.

One of the best parts is the view from the steps in front of the basilica. From there, you can see all of Paris. It’s especially beautiful at sunset.

If you don’t want to climb all the stairs, you can take the Funiculaire de Montmartre. It’s quick, easy, and included in a regular metro ticket. It also makes the experience a bit more fun.

2. Walk Around Place du Tertre

Just a few minutes from Sacré-Cœur, you will find this small square full of artists painting and drawing portraits.

It’s very touristic, but still charming. You can sit at one of the cafés, watch the painters, or even get your own portrait done. It really feels like stepping back into the bohemian Paris of the past.

3. See the Iconic La Maison Rose

One of the most photographed places in Montmartre is La Maison Rose. This small pink house on Rue de l’Abreuvoir looks like something from a movie.

It used to be a meeting place for artists, and today it’s a restaurant. Even if you don’t eat there, it’s worth walking by and taking a photo. The area around it is also very calm and beautiful.

4. Discover the Artists’ History

Montmartre was home to many famous artists like Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh. They lived and worked here when the area was cheaper and full of creative energy.

You can visit the Musée de Montmartre to learn more about the artistic history of the neighborhood. The museum also has a lovely garden with a view over the vineyards.

5. See the Famous Moulin Rouge

At the bottom of Montmartre, you will find the famous red windmill of the Moulin Rouge. Even if you don’t go inside for a show, it’s fun to see and take a photo.

8. Buy Non-Touristy Souvenirs at FRENCH ABROAD boutique

If you don’t want the typical “I love Paris” souvenirs, go a bit outside the most touristic streets and visit the FRENCH ABROAD boutique at 55 rue La Condamine. OUI OUI Sweatshirt, NOT ARROGANT JUST FRENCH and so much more!

You can find more unique, stylish pieces that feel more authentic and less cliché. It’s perfect if you want something special to remember your trip.
